Disordered Eating & Body Image
What is Body Image?
Body Image is how you view yourself both physically and mentally. The way you perceive yourself starts from a young age. Your experiences and messages you receive about appearance help to inform how you look at yourself. Having a balanced view of yourself is essential to healthy mental well-being.
Body image concerns can impact everyone of all ages, genders, and cultures. You may experience:
- Not wanting to engage in social activities
- Feeling unhappy with the way you look in the mirror
- Comparing the way you look to others
- Preoccupation with weight, calories, and food
Disordered eating typically stems from negative body image. Disordered eating can include some of the following:
- Anxiety eating around others
- Frequent dieting
- Skipping meals
- Fasting (non religious)
- Vomiting*
- Taking Laxatives*
Disordered eating can lead to serious health outcomes. It is important to address these concerns promptly while taking care of how difficult they can be to navigate.
*If you are currently engaging in these behaviors, you may require a higher level of care. Find out during initial consultation, if we will be a good fit for you.
